The Coming of the Greeks Marks the Turn to the Cross

This meditation is based on a passage for September 15, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 12:20-26

Reflection and Question: Jesus is in full control in the Gospel of John. He may not always like what He has to do — He balked at the wedding at Cana and wept with Mary when Lazarus died — but He always knows what his duty is. So, Jesus declares that the hour has finally come to be glorified when He receives this sign: Greeks have come to see Him. His message has extended beyond His people, the Jews, and is drawing Gentiles to Him. As Jesus turns to the Cross, He reminds us that we are to serve and follow Him. How do you follow Jesus by being the grain of wheat that falls to earth and dies?

Prayer: Blessed Jesus, Your challenge to us is stark and mystifying. If we love this life we will lose it; if we hate this life then we will keep it eternally. Your way in life shows us how to live this paradox: we simply follow You. Help us, we pray. Amen.
